Wine culture has played an important role in Greek history since the time of ancient Greece. Archaeological finds throughout Greece prove that wine was cultivated as early as 6500 years ago. Greek wines are among the finest due to the excellent climatic conditions. Local varieties that can only be found in Greece are also grown here. The total area of vineyards is approximately 190,000 hectares and the annual production is around 5 million hectolitres of wine. Greek wines are typical southern wines.
Sutto is a family-owned business with almost a century of tradition and is very committed to family values. Sutto has three lines of wines, namely Sutto, Batiso and Polje. Sutto is located in the province of Treviso, specifically in the wine-growing village of Campo di Pietra. It is located 40 km from Venice and 100 km from Cortina d'Ampezzo. The winery farms a whole 50 hectares within the famous Regioni Piave, where the origin of DOC Piave was born. The wine growing system is newly developed with a high density of plants per hectare. The wine varieties are chosen according to the characteristics of the soil. Batiso is located in the province of Treviso, specifically in the Regioni Valdobbiadene. The field is located in the province of Collio and specifically the vineyard is located on the sunny side of the Cormons mountains and the wine is harvested by hand.
Sutto wines can also be tasted in the typical Venetian family restaurant Ca' Landello if you are travelling to Venice. This popular traditional restaurant is located in Noventa di Piave, very close to the Omnia Hotel and the Outlet Town. It is set amongst the Prosecco and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and offers traditional local cuisine.
The Sutto family are friends of ours and every year we have taken their wines home for our own use. We wished that they would start importing wines to the Czech Republic.
The history of the family winery dates back to the 70s, when Nino Folonari purchased two wineries in Greve in Chianti. Tenuta di Nozzole and Tenuta Cabreo. Since 2000, the winery has been run by Ambrogio and Giovanni (son and grandson of the founder), who have expanded their estate with three more wineries in the most important regions of Tuscany - Montalcino, Montepulciano and Bolgheri. The portfolio thus includes classic Chianti, Nobile di Montepulciano, the supertossanes of Bolgheri and the famous Brunello. The Folonari winery has repeatedly won the highest awards for its wines (Gambero Rosso, James Suckling,...).
